Two things stood out for me in this episode. The first was Alice Fraser talking about how her aim with her podcast was not to have experts talking about their subject of expertise; but to have ordinary people talk and hopefully change their mind about something they aren’t sure about.

I don’t know if that is the best thing that can be done with a podcast, but I admire the way she decided that this was the best way to improve discourse and then went ahead with it. And I look forward to seeing it working.

The second was the slightly sheepish way in which Neal Downward talked about how his early comedy hiring was a little bit neoptistic in that it started with his friends circle; but then eventually expanded into diverse directions. There was a defense of quotas in there – and I think a defense of quotas might have to be qualified based on the circumstances of both the quoters and the quotee – but let’s put that aside for now. It became relevant to me both as a hiring manager over the next many years; and as somebody who is working on a friend’s project to get a bunch of talented people together.

Which brings me to another insight about Tea With Alice as a whole – it doesn’t expose me to new ideas, but it does seem to expose me to new practices and ways of doing things.
