Science writer Julia Belluz of Vox.com talks to EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the state of epidemiology, nutrition, and the relationship between obesity and metabolism.

I wish the episode had gone into more detail about how the metabolic chamber worked. All the other topics – the state of studies on metabolism, the danger of observational studies, the difficulty of designing any study about diet – were familiar ground, and covered too lightly for me to remember anything special.

What still stood out though – being reminded of the disgraced Cornell scientist who fudged all his nutrition studies; and the explanation of why that recent headline of ‘Study shows that safest level of drinking is zero’ was not even true at the study level (one drink a day, apparently); and all the ways in which the study itself was flawed.
