Matt Kirshen, Probably Science Podcaster, writer on the Jim Jefferies show, comedian, british export to the US talks over a cup of “normal tea” about nerves, confidence, roles and dating.

Listen Date: 2019-03-18

Notes:

The most interesting thing in this episode was Kirshen’s riff on how comedy involves having to be insecure enough to seek the approval and applause of other people; but also having to be confident enough to go up on stage and get it; and how that weird tension interacts with you also hating the work you do for not being good enough. That in turn ties into the heartwarming Ira Glass quote about being a beginner and having good taste.

The other interesting bit was of Alice Fraser describing the podcast as the equivalent of fourth date conversation; and the discussion they had about whether you would want or not want people you’re dating to know your stage persona before they meet you for a date. It seems a little parallel to how I now think of the difference between private journals and public blogs; and this blog itself of course is somewhere in between. Back in the day, I would have happily used my blog as advertising for myself prior to a date; but now I’m not so sure, and it’s anyway a moot point now that I’m happily married. Still.
