Historian and author Jill Lepore talks about nationalism, populism, and the state of America with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. Lepore argues that we need a new Americanism, a common story we share and tell ourselves. Along the way, topics in the conversation include populism, the rise of globalization, and the challenge of knowing what is true and what is false in the internet era.

Notes:

  • I had known about Jill Lepore from the New Yorker, but had no idea that she was a Harvard professor.
  • I didn’t focus on any specific part of the interview, but overall it seemed sadly reminiscent of what India is going through as well.
  • The discussion about folklore versus academic history; and the absence of names that separate the various degrees, was interesting to me.
  • And the argument that the Vietnam War and the Bicentennial celebrations are what creates the New Left and everything from Howard Zinn onwards was very very interesting. What a turning point.
