  • I hadn’t read anything about Blackbeard, ever. So even the kitchen bits, and the story of Stede Bonnet the wannabe pirate who paid wages instead of dividends, was amazing to hear.
  • The other key learning from this episode was that the epidemic of Atlantic Piracy in the eighteenth century which gives us the pop culture image of pirates was thanks to the British Government issuing letters of marque to privateers during the War of Spanish Succession; and once the war was over; many sea captains being stuck with warships and nothing legal to do with them. Truly, nobody fucks up like the British.
