Notes:

  • This is beginning to feel like a short story collection about the Ponds and the Doctor instead of a novel. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s taken me until this episode to make my peace with it. So it goes.
  • Since I know that the Ponds exit in the next episode, the foreshadowing feels pretty grim. But the Doctor telling Amy that he runs to her instead of away from anything else was very well done and quite sweet.
  • Yorkshire pudding, ahahahah. And Amy marrying Henry VIII.
  • I was thinking of the snowglobes from Reaper Man in connection with the sudden appearance of the cubes, but no, it went in another direction.
  • Some pseudo-intellectual pfaffing now, which ties in to the In Our Time episode on Hope: the Doctor says that humans are creatures of hope; which is true enough, but what if the Shakri are like the old early Christians who think that hope is a sin, and so that argument isn’t going to persuade them? And this is the pseudo-intellectual bit – maybe the cubes are cubes as a dedication to Pandora’s box. Pandora’s box opened, and all that was left was hope – and humans had hope, so they opened these boxes.
  • So UNIT finally returns.
  • Brian Cox cameo, ahahaha.
  • There was something which, while watching, reminded me of Douglas Adams, but I can’t remember exactly what, now.
  • The bit about the Doctor thinking that all Amy and Rory do while he’s away is kiss – and the look on Rory’s face that goes “Well, why don’t we?” – whatay.
