  • Eurgh, what a damp squib after high expectations. Season 5 and Season 6 had crackling finales. And after rescuing the universe, rescuing time itself, all this does is save the Doctor.
  • This just meandered about, and asked us to believe in all new abilities. Time travel across dreams, really?
  • So we finally find out why Clara is the impossible girl, and I have to say, I’m disappointed. It feels like Rose Tyler rehashed.
  • Moreover, it doesn’t feel like the Great Intelligence is truly menacing, just a monster of the week that somehow got lucky enough to find the Doctor’s tomb.
  • River Song is delightful as always, though.

2019-09-12 Update:

  •  So… this is, in a way, a complete reversal of Clara in The Rings of Akhaten. In that episode, she offered up a leaf because a physical object was imbued with awesome psychic potential. In this episode, we get the line about ‘the souffle isn’t the souffle, the recipe is the souffle’; which dismisses physical objects altogether. The simplest explanation is that the episodes being written by two different writers ended up in philosophically different places, but if you wanted to, you could see it as the overall Doctor Who story being able to accomodate both the magic of things, and the magic of ideas untethered to things.
