“They say that people dealing with grief get associated with drugs, alcohol, and smoking but it’s important to know that most of these instances stem out of self-neglect and self-depreciation.” This week, Zain and Avanti are joined by podcast producer, Jaanam Dewan for the second part on dealing with grief and loss. On this episode, they dive deep on the cathartic aspect of grief and discuss how putting yourself first in certain situations should not be looked down upon. Notes:

  • The personal testimonies of dealing with grief were touching, but I didn’t really take anything away from them, except that I should try to find which Jaanam Dewan’s Vipassana institute was, and try to enrol myself and see if it helps.
  • And, to some extent, the realisation that I’ll have to deal with grief myself in the medium term (I hope it’s not the near term), and that I am completely unprepared for it.
  • What did make an impact was how it connected with the EconTalk episode about ‘My Father Left Me Ireland’. Dougherty talked about how the presence of a defined set of Irish rituals after his father’s death provided him comfort; and made a case for having defined rituals in all aspects of life, instead of creating your own. But those defined rituals are there to provide comfort to people who’re grieving, and who are incapable of exercising choices. It’s an extremely special case, and hardly one that carries over to the rest of life. I’m not sure if Dougherty is an idiot, or if there are special circumstances he’s been through that make him think that all of life is like grief.
