[The Good Place] S02E01: Everything is Great!

Watch Date: 21 May 2021

Watched on: Netflix

IMDb link: Everything is Great!

Netflix Summary:

With their memories erased, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani and Jason start their Good Place experience all over again. Eleanor tries to understand her clue.

Notes:

  • Well, that was… devious by the writers. Setting up a cliffhanger at the end of last season, having fun with it all episode, and then having it turn out to be pointless in the episode climax and now I’m left with dashed expectations of what will happen over the rest of the season.
  • It’s been a year since I last saw The Good Place, and I’m rereading old notes and seeing that insights I had during this episode – yep, I’d had them in the last season as well. But, to refresh, anyway:
    • I want Shivani to watch this just so she can see Chidi’s torment and relate to it
    • I also want Shivani to watch because I think Jianyu / Jason’s bike in this is the same one she bought from Decathlon
    • Four people tormenting each other is a weird “Hell is other people” brought to life deal
  • Watching the demons be frustrated that they couldn’t do what they were good at – burning people, twisting people, and had to do this high concept intellectual work instead – reminds me of my bad days when I would rather just run a spreadsheet and shoot off a costing instead of actually take decisions. Or, if I wanted to put a positive spin on it – my good days where repetitively cutting vegetables is soothing and gives me a sense of immediate accomplishment.
  • I was kind of wondering if this season would be about bringing together the four characters and them being able to escape The Good Place only through coming together, and if that would make the larger season theme about finding grace from other people and not from god. But, like I said, the episode climax has put paid to that for now. But what fun symmetry that would have been – to move from torturing each other to rescuing each other.
  • Somehow, last year I never got inspired to add What We Owe To Other People to my TBR pile. Done now.
  • In fact, here’s a whole reading list (to go with it, I hope you enjoy the program).
  • Seeing the demons have very petty jealousy or resentment over their roles (Vicky / Denise / Real Eleanor), or trying to save their skins (Michael lying to his boss) is something I had not anticipated. Demons are human too.
